Helping Men Recover

2024 Open Enrollment Virtual Training Opportunity

Dr. Covington’s revised innovative, evidence-based 21 session program for men is grounded in research, theory, and clinical practice.  Space will be limited for this interactive virtual training.

This 4 day (4.5 hours per day) virtual training presents an innovative treatment program, Helping Men Recover: A Program for Treating Addiction. The presenter has developed, with Dr. Stephanie Covington and Dan Griffin, the first gender-responsive and trauma-informed treatment curriculum for men.  The first edition was published in 2011 and over the past decade has been utilized by treatment programs throughout the US and Canada. The second edition was released in the summer of 2022. This edition contains up to date information about addiction and trauma and has been revised to reflect the experiences and needs of gender non-conforming individuals. Helping Men Recover addresses what is often missing in prevailing treatment models: a clear understanding of the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, a consideration of the relational needs of men, and a focus on the issues of abuse and trauma.  Existing models often provide little direction in helping men to establish a healthy sense of self outside of stereotypical masculine scripts.  In contrast, this is one of the primary goals of Helping Men Recover.

Helping Men Recover integrates a theory of addiction, a theory of trauma, and a theory of male psychosocial development.  The program materials consist of a facilitator manual and a participant workbook.  There is a community version and a criminal justice version. This presentation provides an historical overview of the history of men’s treatment and the research that establishes the foundation for this innovative curriculum. However, the main focus of this training is on the interactive exercises drawn from the curriculum.

This training is conducted by our Certified Trainer, Rick Dauer, LADC, co-author of Helping Men Recover and retired Clinical Director of River Ridge Treatment Center and now an independent behavioral health consultant and trainer.  Throughout this interactive training, he will also discuss how the treatment program materials can be used with men in the criminal justice system.

Criminal Justice Version: Table of Contents

The facilitator’s manual is a step-by-step guide containing the theory, structure, and content needed for running groups. A Man's Journal, the participant’s workbook, allows men to process and record the therapeutic experience. The materials are designed to be user-friendly and self-instructive. This allows the HMR program to be implemented by a staff with a wide range of training and experience.
